Ghana is now looking to create history by becoming the first African team to reach the semi final of a World Cup tournament. No other African team could ever step into the last four of this most prestigious football event.

In fact, Ghana is the only third African side to have reached the quarter final in World Cup. Cameroon reached the last eight in 1990, before Senegal’s triumphant performance in the 2002 tournament where they progressed to the quarter final.

On the other hand, playing in the quarter final or reaching the semi final may not be a big issue for the two-time world champion Uruguay, but the South Americans did not see any considerable success in the last 3 or 4 decades in World Cup. The last time Uruguay could come this far in a World Cup was in 1970 when they lost to the eventual champion Brazil 3-1 in the semi final.

The senior teams of Uruguay and Ghana have never faced each other, but they met in the U-20 World Cup 2009 where the match ended up in a 2-2 draw. Six players of Ghana’s U-20 World Cup winning squad are now playing in the ongoing World Cup.

Ghana defeated USA 2-1 in the round of 16 after in-form striker Asamoah Gyan scored in extra time, while Uruguay defeated South Korea 2-1 in the previous round. Both sides have some attacking minded players who could be the decisive factors in the match.

Ghanaian striker Gyan, who has scored 3 goals so far, and Kevin-Prince Boateng are fit for the match Uruguay match. John Mensah and Samuel Inkoom are also most likely to be available. However, Dede Ayew and Jonathan Mensah are suspended. Sulley Muntari could be in the starting line up in the absence of Ayew.

Uruguay has two prolific scorers in Luis Suárez, who also has 3 goals to his credit, and Diego Forlán. Inured defender Diego Godin would most probably miss the match and Victorino would take his place.
