Khatta Meetha: A poorly made movie from Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan

Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan starrer Khatta Meetha released in theatres today and the movie fails to live up to its expectation. Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar gave us some great comedies over the years such as Bhagam Bhag, Garam Masala, De Dana Dan, Hera Pheri, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Naturally, people would expect another great laugh riot but unfortunately Khatta Meetha is a poorly written and executed movie. Except some comedy sequences, it has nothing memorable.

Akshay Kumar plays Sachin Tichkule, a common man inspired by A. R. Laxman’s famous cartoon character. A road contractor Sachin Tichkule is doomed, for he has no money to bribe government officials. Things become more complicated when Tichkule’s college-time girlfriend, Gehna Ganpule (Trisha Krishnan) becomes Municipal commissioner who is very honest and strict.

It is true that Priyadarshan’s movies are not famous for stories. He just takes up characters in put them in a confusing situation. However, Khatta Meetha is said to be a political satire that tries to expose the rampant corruption of the government. This has to come out through a story and Khatta Meetha has no story but a collection of some isolated incidents and its 2 hour 40 minutes length makes matter worse giving the viewers nothing but bad headaches after they walk out of the theatres.

Pritam’s music is soothing to the ears but the songs are not placed well in the movie. In terms of acting, Akshay Kumar played his part of a struggling road contractor pretty convincingly but Trisha Krishnan fails to portray the character of a fiery municipal commissioner. However, Asrani, Yadav and Liver provide some hilarious scenes.

Akshay Kumar starrer Khatta Meetha ran into problems with Animal rights group

Akshay Kumar’s upcoming comedy movie, Khatta Meetha, is releasing on July 23, 2010. The movie has been cleared out by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on July 13, 2010.

However, certain groups of people lodged complaints against clearing the movie for it contained a sequence that is related to animal cruelty. In the movie, an elephant had been shown pulling a road roller and it did not go down well with many animal rights activist.

The people who filed complaints against the movie asked CBFC to order the makers of the movie to delete the scene. This means that the film would have to be re-edited which would result into a postponement of the current release date and it would be a big problem.

However, the two parties reached a solution. So, there is no problem for releasing the movie Khatta Meetha. Khatta Meetha is the first Hindi movie of South Indian actress Trisha Krishnan but she could not attend the promotion of the movie. So, Akshay Kumar is now working hard to promote the film.

To promote the movie, Akshay Kumar went out on an inspection of the roads of Mumbai just like his character, “Sachin Tichkule,” a road construction contractor, in the movie. The campaign was also intended to increase awareness regarding the poor conditions of the roads in suburban Mumbai.

Khatta Meetha is a remake of the 1989 Malayalam movie, Vellanakalude Nadu, which was also directed by Priyadarshan.
