Khatta Meetha: A poorly made movie from Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan

Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan starrer Khatta Meetha released in theatres today and the movie fails to live up to its expectation. Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar gave us some great comedies over the years such as Bhagam Bhag, Garam Masala, De Dana Dan, Hera Pheri, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Naturally, people would expect another great laugh riot but unfortunately Khatta Meetha is a poorly written and executed movie. Except some comedy sequences, it has nothing memorable.

Akshay Kumar plays Sachin Tichkule, a common man inspired by A. R. Laxman’s famous cartoon character. A road contractor Sachin Tichkule is doomed, for he has no money to bribe government officials. Things become more complicated when Tichkule’s college-time girlfriend, Gehna Ganpule (Trisha Krishnan) becomes Municipal commissioner who is very honest and strict.

It is true that Priyadarshan’s movies are not famous for stories. He just takes up characters in put them in a confusing situation. However, Khatta Meetha is said to be a political satire that tries to expose the rampant corruption of the government. This has to come out through a story and Khatta Meetha has no story but a collection of some isolated incidents and its 2 hour 40 minutes length makes matter worse giving the viewers nothing but bad headaches after they walk out of the theatres.

Pritam’s music is soothing to the ears but the songs are not placed well in the movie. In terms of acting, Akshay Kumar played his part of a struggling road contractor pretty convincingly but Trisha Krishnan fails to portray the character of a fiery municipal commissioner. However, Asrani, Yadav and Liver provide some hilarious scenes.

Akshay Kumar starrer Khatta Meetha ran into problems with Animal rights group

Akshay Kumar’s upcoming comedy movie, Khatta Meetha, is releasing on July 23, 2010. The movie has been cleared out by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on July 13, 2010.

However, certain groups of people lodged complaints against clearing the movie for it contained a sequence that is related to animal cruelty. In the movie, an elephant had been shown pulling a road roller and it did not go down well with many animal rights activist.

The people who filed complaints against the movie asked CBFC to order the makers of the movie to delete the scene. This means that the film would have to be re-edited which would result into a postponement of the current release date and it would be a big problem.

However, the two parties reached a solution. So, there is no problem for releasing the movie Khatta Meetha. Khatta Meetha is the first Hindi movie of South Indian actress Trisha Krishnan but she could not attend the promotion of the movie. So, Akshay Kumar is now working hard to promote the film.

To promote the movie, Akshay Kumar went out on an inspection of the roads of Mumbai just like his character, “Sachin Tichkule,” a road construction contractor, in the movie. The campaign was also intended to increase awareness regarding the poor conditions of the roads in suburban Mumbai.

Khatta Meetha is a remake of the 1989 Malayalam movie, Vellanakalude Nadu, which was also directed by Priyadarshan.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar team up in Action Replayy

It looks like the year 2010 will be the year of comeback for actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. After teaming up with hubby Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan teamed up with Bollywood’s Khiladi No.1, Akshay Kumar in Vipul Sah directed, Action Replayy, a romantic comedy.

This is the first movie of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with Vipul Shah and second outing with Akshay Kumar. Previously, they worked in action movie, Khakee where Aishwarya Rai played a negative character.

The story of the movie is set in the 1970s which is considered to be the golden period in the history of Hindi cinema.

Already the first look of the movie has been unveiled which shows Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar in the retro 70’s look. Akshay Kumar dons long hair, wears floral pink shirt and checked bell bottom pants which was very popular at that time. Aishwarya Rai wore a boot with a pink short dress printed with flower prints. They were sitting on a Lambretta Vespa scooter with hearts.

The movie has a theme of time travel. Aksyha Kumar and Aishwarya Rai played Kishen and Mala, two bickering senior citizens who rekindle their love life on their 33rd Anniversary after their son put them in rewind mode.

Akshay was very excited about the idea because it was a time when his father-in-law Rajesh Khanna was the superstar. He said, “Ash and I had a brief romantic interlude in Raj Kumar Santoshi's Khakee, but Action Replayy is our first romantic comedy together. Believe me, I was blushing through the making and there's a lot I wish to tell my audience about. But Vipul wants me to keep things under wraps for the moment.”

Vipul Shah said, “Akki and I have an impeccable box office record. We enjoyed success with Ankhein, Waqt -- Race Again Namastey London and Singh is Kinng. Action Replayy is a film where the two of us return after a gap of almost three years. And believe me, it is a great way to return.”

Akshay Kumar has no problem doing more than one film a year

Akshay Kumar is one of the top actors in Bollywood but unlike other top actors in Bollywood who does only one movie a year, Akshay Kumar has no problem churning out three, four, five movies a year.

Akshay Kumar is not choosy about his roles. He said, "I just want to make most of my time... I'll do as many films as I can. Movie making is exhilerating,"

Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan release only one movie a year. These actors focus very much on quality and they are all very successful. For example, in 2009, Aamir Khan did only one movie, 3 Idiots. Not only the received critical appraisal. It went to become the top grossing movie of the year. The same thing happened with Ghajini in 2008.

However, Akshay Kumar has no qualms about his style. Regarding Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, he said, “ It's to each his own, really! They have their way or working, I have mine. What works for me may not work for them, what works for them may not work for me. But the best part of it all is that whatever 'strategy' chosen - if 'strategy' is the word you insist to use - is working for each one of us."
