Argentina and Brazil Match Live Updates: 5 September 2009

Argentina and Brazil are the two biggest rivals in football and the rivalry between the two Latin powerhouses is perhaps the fiercest in world football. The two arch-rivals are going to meet once again in a breath-taking world cup qualifying game on 5 September 2009 (Saturday) at the Estadio Gigante de Arroyito, Rosario. No doubt, prestige and pride are always big matters whenever Brazil and Argentina take on each other on football ground. However, this time both sides know the fact that both prestige and points are at stake ahead of the upcoming game. Naturally, Argentina and Brazil both would like to give their best on Saturday in order to win this important and prestigious world cup qualifier.

Argentina may have home advantage, but it is pretty much clear that they have huge pressure mounting on their shoulder ahead of the game as they are currently in the 4th place of the point table of world cup qualifying round of CONMEBOL region. Argentina has 22 points from 14 games and has 4 matches left in hand including the Brazil match. They are only 2 points ahead of fifth placed Ecuador and have 4-point advantage over sixth-placed Uruguay in the standing. So, Argentina can not afford another defeat on Saturday, considering the fact that only the top four sides are eligible for direct qualification into the final tournament of world cup and Argentina is already in the fourth position. Though the fifth-placed team can also win a world cup place by defeating the fourth-placed team of CONCACAF region in a two-legged play-off match, I do not thing Argentina would like to go through the play-off game.

Brazil, on the other hand, has all the possibilities to ensure their world cup qualification on Saturday. What they need is to win over Argentina and a win for Colombia over Ecuador. Even Brazil knows it very well that they would not finish anywhere less than the fifth placed, regardless of their performance in the remaining four games. Brazil has 27 points from 14 games with 7 wins, 6 draws and one defeat, and thus, having a five-point advantage over fourth placed Argentina and seven-point advantage over fifth placed Ecuador.

So, you can see that Argentina is now facing a ‘do or die’ situation and a defeat to Brazil would increase Argentina’s possibility to miss out on a world cup place for the first time since 1970. Argentina is definitely one of the most influential football-playing countries and it would definitely be a huge disappointment for millions of Argentina fans around the world, if they really fail to qualify for the world cup.

The man whom Argentina owes a lot for their worldwide popularity as a football-playing nation is none other than Diego Maradona who is the current coach of Argentina team. No doubt, Maradona is now under huge pressure as a coach following Argentina’s humiliating 6-1 away defeat by Bolivia last April. In fact, Argentina lost 2 of their last three qualifying matches including a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador in the last round. Brazil, on the other hand, has been in good form as they did not lose any of their last nine games in the world cup qualifying competition.

So, naturally Argentine fans are very much concerned about Argentina’s recent lackluster form. Maradona has admitted that his team would play for their lives against Brazil. However, he is very much respectful about the strength of Brazil team and has asked his players to remain united ahead of the clash against their biggest rivals.

Los Angles Times reported:

Maradona told TyC Sports, "Against Brazil we will play for our lives."

He told Radio Palermo that Argentina would win "because we have better players."
He told reporters in Rosario that "the entire Brazilian team makes me scared. They have a fantastic side."

He was quoted on FIFA's website as saying that the Brazilians "play joyful, entertaining football, while we have fighting spirit and good players. I don't think one is any better than the other."

"We are all Argentines and we're going to be coming up against our biggest rivals. We have to remain united; otherwise, Brazil can do us great harm."

"We already know who Maradona is. . . . What he says isn't worth taking into consideration."

It is needless to say how much excitement this match would stir up among the football fans around the world. Brazil-Argentina match means something special to the football fans; be it a friendly or competitive match. The same thing goes to the upcoming game too. Now, add all those point-related equations. Naturally, it has become the centre of all attraction at this moment in world football.

Well, I do not think that Argentina will be lack of confidence while facing their arch rivals in a ‘must-win’ game like this. Moreover, they will be playing before the home crowd, and thus, having no lack of confidence, regardless of their recent form. Brazil, on the other hand, may have all the reasons to be full of confidence, but they know it very well that defeating an Argentine side boasting of the players like Tevez, Messi in front of their own supporters would be that easy. Overall, I think, both teams have equal chances in the match and football fans are going to face another enthralling display of football between the game’s two biggest rivals.
