Earthquake in Eid Day in Bangladesh

It happened 5 minutes before 4 PM. I was sitting in my PC and suddenly, my chair started to tremble. My whole body was shaking too. Naturally, I became afraid because this time, I touched the earthquake very clearly. I heard that some people became afraid and they went out to the street. Well, I stayed in home. Then I checked some Bangla blogs and also Bdnews.com and become sure that it was indeed an earthquake in Eid Day in Bangladesh.

Today is Eid ur Fitr or Ramjan Eid in popular term. It is the biggest festival for the Muslims of Bangladesh. In the last months, several earthquakes took place in Bangladesh but all of them are after midnight. So, most people were asleep and did not touch them. However, this time, it happened at noon and almost everyone touched. It is clear to everyone that big cities like Dhaka and Chittagong are ill equipped to fight against a powerful earthquake. I am in my mid 30s and I cannot remember of any year with so many earthquakes in Dhaka in the same year.
You can read some more in Bdnews here: 'Big' tremor jolts Dhaka
By the way, there is some news that the quake was felt in some other districts of the country too.

  1. I think time has come (actually gone) to seriously think about earthquake in Dhaka. These days I am getting paranoid when I go to office leaving my 8-year old boy school/home,thinking whether everything will be alright or tumbled down the entire day! Since we have no options to stop earthquaks, we should find ways to aware people of 'how to tackle' and 'what to do'. I think schools should take measures to teach children what to do when the first jolt starts. The development sector/ social communication sector should come forward to let people know what to do first without getting panicky. We always wish for a big 'happening' but this time we don't want the 'big one' which everybody is calculating would happen, to happen.

  3. I cant sleep these days after feeling some earthquakes occurred at night. Its now clear that we the Bangladeshi will face the truth like China or other earthquake effected nations. I already started feeling sorry for myself,my family , my country & people. Bangladesh may be poor but still a beautiful country. We want to live here peacefully.May our Almighty let us more chance to pray to him.

  4. I reside in U.K. but my mother and married sister lives in Sylhet.

I heard the news from my mother after I phoned her for Eid greetings. It is sad and I feel for my country as the probability of a major strike is imminent.

I remember in early 70's when my deceased father invested a huge amount of money just on the foundation of our present 4 story building reinforcing it with top quality extra rods and cement.

His close friends and family member then had a good laugh stating that it was just a waste of money and instead the finance could have been utilised better to extend the building to 8 story high.

My father replied then " I am just making sure that when the day comes, my building and my family will stay intact while everything is flattened as far as your eyes can see.... "

It was a wise statement as far as I am concerned and let us all hope that my father was wrong and Allah has mercy on our country!
