Airtel App Central observed 13 million downloads in just four months

Since its launch, Airtel App Central, the official mobile applications store of Bharti Airtel, observed 13 billion downloads in just four months. The app store was launched on February 9, 2010.

This means, in the last four months, the app store observed 1.2 download on an average every second.

Atul Bindal, President, Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel said, “Four months since it opened Airtel App Central continues its triumphant march, transforming into Smartphones the basic devices of an increasing number of Airtel mobile customers across the country. Airtel customers have identified our Easy Single-ClickSingle-Click Purchase Mechanism as the most popular aspect of the Store. With over 32 percent of downloads paid for, App Central is also emerging as the preferred destination for existing and upcoming developers in India and the world over.”

Initially, the Airtel App Central had 1250 applications divided into 25 categories such as social networking, games, news, business, sports, travel, education and health. Initially, these applications were supported by 550 devices.

Now, the app store has an impressive 71,000 applications supporting 780 devices.

There are both paid and free applications but one does not require any credit card or bank account. The price of the application is simply deducted from the buyer’s talktime or added to mobile bills. The lowest price of an application is Rs.5.
