Germany and Ghana take on each other in a crucial Group D encounter today (23 June) at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg. With Ghana and Germany occupying the top two places in the point table, there is every possibility, both sides could reach the knock out stage from this group.
Qualification to the round of 16 is still open to all the members of the group. Serbia with 3 points has very good chance, while Australia, despite having just 1 point to their credit, still has a slight chance to progress to the next round. Serbia and Australia would each other face in their final group match today.
The winning side of the Germany vs Ghana match would, for sure, secure a place in the next round, while the losing side would have to depend on the result of the other match. If Serbia wins over Australia, they would be through to the next round and in that case, the losing side of the Germany-Ghana match would be eliminated.
Now, if both the matches end up in draw, Germany and Ghana would go through to the knock out stage with Ghana being the group champion, and thus, opening up a possibility of Germany vs England second round tie.
While Ghana needs just a point to ensure their progress, Germany must win to clinch their place in the next round. A draw would leave Germany in a position where they have to hope Australia wins over Serbia or holds Serbia to a draw.
A win would ensure Serbia’s progress, but a draw would leave Serbia hoping for a German defeat at the hands of Ghana. For Australia, they have to win over Serbia and hope that Germany is defeated by Ghana.
