Chelsea Ready to Pay £10m for Benfica Defender David Luiz

Premier League champion Chelsea has reportedly made a £10 million bid for Benfica center back David Luiz. A report published by The Times has revealed that the Blues are largely interested to secure the Brazilian’s service for the next season.

It is a no surprise that Chelsea is looking to bolster its central defense options by bringing in a talented and young player like David Luiz who, at 23, could serve for a number of years to come.

Following an excellent season, it is natural that Luiz would attract the interests of the clubs like Chelsea. He joined Benfica in 2007 in a move from Vitoria after spending a season at Benfica on loan. Luiz represented Benfica in 56 league matches. Though he is yet to get a call up from Brazil’s senior team, the young defender was part of Brazil’s 2007 U-20 World Cup squad.

It is believed that Real Madrid and Manchester City are also keen to sign Luiz. Before completing the signing of Jerome Boateng, City had a bid rejected by Benfica for the Brazilian youngster.

Chelsea, though has a number of quality options in John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, would like to add the young player who can gradually replace aging Terry and Carvalho.
