England World Cup 2010 Squad Numbers Announced by FA

The FA has officially announced the numbers that the members of the England World Cup squad would wear in South Africa while representing their country. The squad numbers seem to reflect what would be England’s starting line up in the World Cup finals. The 23-man England squad along with coach Fabio Capello landed in Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

Peter Crouch has been given the no. 9 jersey and it seems he might be the first choice to pair up with Wayne Rooney in England attack. Another candidate Emile Heskey has been handed the no. 21 jersey.

Goalkeeper David James seems to be the frontrunner to become England’s first choice goalkeeper as he has been handed the no. 1 shirt. Wayne Rooney has retained his no. 10 jersey as he is thought to be the biggest hope of the Three Lions. The FA earlier asked each of the 23 players to submit 2 choices for the jersey numbers they would prefer to wear during the tournament.

Injured holding midfielder Gareth Barry would wear the no. 14 shirt, while Ashley Cole’s back up Stephen Warnock has been given the no. 13. Two wingers Joe Cole and Aaron Lennon have got the no. 11 and no. 7 respectively. So, it seems they might be in England’s first eleven ahead of Shaun Wright-Phillips who has been handed the no. 17.

Glen Johnson has been given the no. 2 jersey, and thus, indicating that he could be given priority for the right back position ahead of Jamie Carragher who has got the no. 18.

Coach Fabio Capello, however, has said that he would take the final decision on his starting line up once he has observed the players in their training base located at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus in Rustenburg.

The squad numbers are yet to be approved by FIFA, but there may not be any change in the squad numbers announced by the FA.
