Maruti Suzuki Alto is coming with new features and powerful K-series engine

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. is going to refurbish its top selling Alto with powerful engine and other features.

The new car will sport a 1000cc k-series engine that is already used in Maruti A-Star, Zen Estilo and Wagon R. Upon installation, the new Alto will produce 66bhp and 90 NM torque.

Since the K-series engine is significantly wider than the current 800 cc engine, the front end of the car will be re-designed. The interior of the new Alto will have some new features including new rear mirrors, new headrest to the front seats.

The 1 litre version would come at a premium price and would offer a fuel efficiency of more than 20 kmpl compared to the 19.7kmpl offered by the present Maruti Suzuki Alto.

Till date, Maruti Suzuki Alto used to come in 800 cc engines. With this new engine, the upgraded Alto will offer a better a driving experience.

The upgraded Maruti Suzuki Alto will take on Chevrolet Spark.

At present, the entry level variant of Alto is priced at Rs.2.43 lakh while the high-end model costs about Rs.2.75 lackh. The upgraded Maruti Suzuki Alto would cost Rs.3 lakh.

In May 2010, Maruti Suzuki sold 25,000 Altos. On an average, the company sold 20,000 units per month for several years. Industry experts believe that the upgraded version would increase sales by 50%.

News reports also said that Maruti Suzuki is also developing a stripped down version of Alto for it received a major blow after it withdrew its M800 from thirteen major cities.
