Deepika Padukone: A Freedom Fighter in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey

Bollywood actress, Deepika Padukone, would be seen in a new look in Ashutosh Gowariker’s next film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. The actress plays the role of Kalpana Datta, a Bengali freedom fighter, who fights against the British for the independence of India.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is based on a book titled ‘Do and Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930- 34’ by Manini Chatterjee. Set in Chittagong, a port city of the current-day Bangladesh, the movie also stars Abhishek Bachchan opposite Deepika Padukone. Abhishek Bachchan will play the role of Surya Sen.

Surya Sen is one of the most prominent figures in the history of anti-British movement in India. Kalpana Dutta was one of the assistants of Surya Sen in the armed resistance. She took part in the famous “Chittagong Armory Raid” on April 18, 1930.

To portray the role of a Bengali woman, Deepika Padukone had to wear traditional sari. Initially, the actress faced problems doing her action sequences wearing saris. Noted designer, Neeta Lulla, designed the dress to give Deepika a Bengali look.

Deepika Padukone, who shot to fame with her debut movie, Om Shanti Om, opposite Shah Rukh Khan, has appeared in many glamorous roles so far, but this time the 24-year-old is going to play a non-glamorous role in the movie.

Director, Ashutosh Gowariker, is well-known for his periodical films. He directed hit periodical movies like Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India and Jodhaa Akbar. Gowariker decided to rope in Deepika for the role because of her sporting background. Before coming to acting, Deepika was a state level badminton player.
